An Experimental Investigation of Articular Cartilage Degeneration induced by Condylar Resection of Knee Joint in Rabbits

Abstract
Articular cartilage is avascular and have dual functions of shock absorber and bearing surface in a moving joint. It is known that alteration of synovial-fluid perfusion causes degeneration of articular cartilage because the chondrocytes in mature adult must receive their nurishment solely from synovial fluid perfusion.
Now, in orthopedic fields, the traction is in popular use, and to study the cartilage changes induced by this long term traction, the lateral femoral chondyle was resected about 1 cm from knee joint line in rabbits, and serial histologic examination of articular cartilage was done during 5 weeks.
The results obtained were as followings;
1. The degenerative changes of articular cartilage were observed at 1 week after cond¡þylar resection.
2. The severity of the histologic changes appeared to be related to the duration of condylar resection.
3. Vascular invasion to the calcific cartilage zone was begun from 3 weeks after con¡þdylar resection and degree of vascular invasion was increased with the duration of cond¡þylar resection.
4. Subchondral osteoporosis was begun 3 weeks after condylar resection and severity of osteoporosis was increased with the duration of condylar resection.
